Never thought we'd be seriously considering the iPad for a comprehensive AAC option but, the viability is improving rapidly so here goes....
Current Fav Picks for AAC on the iPad:
If you're looking for AAC options that are highly
customizable with fully developed vocabulary organization (for
expressive/receptive functional communication using word based and phrase based
messaging) Proloquo2Go (especially with the new 2.0 features), TouchChat, and
possibly Sono Flex. We're watching a few other up and coming apps in this
category that have solid design but, so far, lack the fully developed
vocabulary or customization options of these. I have been impressed by the
updates good app developers make to their products over time though, so this
list will probably change!
For context based or activity based communication, Scene
& Heard is an interesting option.
iComm and Sounding Board are good for VERY early choice
making and VERY basic control messages (ex: "more" and "all
done"). Be aware: these 3 require extensive user
customization. They are not
comprehensive systems and rarely will work alone to meet all of a users needs
over time.
Predictable rocks for text to speech. Verbally is the free option in this category
that is usable.
As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Take a minute to make a thoughtful choice so
you don't waste your money on inexpensive but minimally useful AAC apps you
will only discard. AND, be sure the iPad
is only one of the options you consider- generally speaking we have found the
dedicated systems are better for durability, sound quality, support, warranty
and content. (and if you live in GA, and have Medicaid, these dedicated systems
are fully funded if they are justified).
*Disclaimer- We have been given all of these apps to review over the past several
years. That being said, we have been
given a LOT more AAC apps that each have their own merits but are not yet in
the league with the apps recommended in this post.
